This story in The New York Times last week said that inflation has dropped the value of Venezuela’s currency to half the dollar, effectively decreasing minimum wage earnings to $5 a RS gold.
“I’m Venezuelan and I am deeply hurt by studying some of the comments in this thread. I have been part of this community since old-school came out and have never seen so much hate and racism,” wrote Redditor glow_party (in a comment moved into the top of the ribbon by moderators).
“Let me tell you something, these individuals are doing whatever they can to survive and they’ve never done something wrong,” glow_party proceeded . “As a Venezuelan I can tell you that the hatred towards my folks is sad and something that I never expected to come out of this buy Runescape gold.”
Another user pointed out an earlier strategy, killing the boss called Zulrah, was netting someone $5 a day until Runescape writer Jagex nerfed what Zulrah dropped in response.
The more considerate anti-Venezuelan remarks pointed out that gold farming was contrary to the Runescape rules (punishable because bans) and a few wrote off the manual for a joke. But few found it a laughing matter, particularly as it assumed that anybody from Venezuela from the game was a gold farmer, getting them killed in PvP despite not doing something wrong.
